MIR ISKUSSTVA (The World of Art), a literary journal of art, founded in 1898 by S. P. Dyagilev with the contribution of the members of an artistic circle of the same name, (see Mir Iskusstva). The editorial office was accommodated in Dyagilev's house (45 Liteiny Avenue; from 1900 at 11 Fontanka River Embankment). The journal circulated until 1904, in 1899-1900 it appeared twice a month, from 1901 - monthly (with a total of 96 issues), and was co-published by its editor Dyagilev (in 1904 jointly with A. N. Benois); Princess М. K. Tenishcheva and Savva Morozov (Patron of art) (until 1900). From 1900 the journal received funding from Emperor Nicholas' II personal assets. L. S. Bakst, I. E. Grabar, V. F. Nouvel, А. P. Nurok, S. P. Yaremich et al. were its regular contributors. The literary section headed by D. V. Filosofov was represented by Zinaida Gippius, D. S. Merezhkovsky, N. M. Minsky, V. V. Rozanov, Fedor Sologub. The journal propagated the national Russian style, which found expression in works of painter V. М. Vasnetsov, S. V. Malyutin, Е. D. Polenova, artists of the so called Abramtsevo Art Colony (a group of artists involved in the revival of Russian tradition). A number of the publications laid the foundation for a systematic study of the Russian art culture of the 18th to early 19 centuries, and gave a novel insight into the works of painters D. G. Levetsky, V. L. Borovikovsky, O. A. Kiprensky, А. G. Venetsianov, of Petersburg Russian Baroque and Classicism architects. The Art Nouveau and Symbolism got a more extensive coverage in publications on contemporary Western art. Some issues contained monographs on М. V. Vrubel, I. E. Repin, V. А. Serov, K. А. Somov et al. The journal was noticeable for its elegant artistic and graphic design thus serving as a model for the future art periodicals. In 1899-1903 the journal organised art exhibitions, whose underlying concept had been formulated in the editorial Complex issues (1899, № 1/2 and 3/4, by Dyagilev and D. V. Filosofov), which was targeted against academic conservatism and tendencies of the Itinerants.
