SHCHEDRIN Semen Fedorovich (1745, St. Petersburg - 1804, the same place), painter, F. F. Shchedrin's brother. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in 1759-67 and its retainer in Germany, Holland, France, and Italy in 1767-76. A teacher in the Academy of Arts from 1776, he its member in 1779, an adjunct rector in 1798, and the head of the landscape engraving class in 1799. A founder of the Russian landscape school, he painted landscapes of St. Petersburg and its picturesque suburbs such as Pavlovsk, Gatchina, and Peterhof, combining sentimentalistic conventional idealism with his desire to reproduce a specific image, as seen in the following panels: Stone Bridge near Konetablya Square in Gatchina, made in 1799-1800 and exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery; View of the Kamenny Island Palace over the Bolshaya Nevka River, made in 1803, and View of the Bolshaya Nevka River and the Stroganov Dacha, made in 1804, both exhibited in the Russian Museum. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery, his remains moved to the Necropolis of the 18th Century in 1939.
