FALCONET Etienne Maurice (1716-1791), sculptor. He studied sculpture under J. B. Le Moin in Paris in 1734-44. He was the director of the Sevres Porcelain Factory in 1757-66. The creator of mythological statues and statuettes such as Milon de Crotone, made of bronze in 1744 and kept in the Russian Museum; Amor and Psyche, both made of biscuit in 1758 and kept in the Hermitage, as well as monumental decorative plastics. He was invited to come to St. Petersburg, as recommended by D. Diderot and Voltaire, to create his major work - the monument to Peter the Great (see Bronze Horseman) - in 1766-78. He also made a model monument for Empress Catherine II in 1768, cast in 1804 and kept in the Russian Museum. He was an honorary associate of the Academy of Arts from 1767. Falconet’s house and workshop were situated at the present-day 6 Kirpichny Lane. He left Russia in 1778 and died in Paris.
