TEREBENEV Family, sculptors, father and son. Ivan Ivanovich Terebenev (1780 - 1815, St. Petersburg). Studied at the Academy of Arts (1785-1800) under M.I. Kozlovsky. Worked in a monumental decorative plastics technique, expressing his patriotic ideas through the characteristic form of the late Russian Classicism, visible in his Restoration of the Russian Fleet bas-relief frieze, and Flying Glories on the central tower of the Main Admiralty (1812-13). In 1812-14 he made a series of cartoons (43 colour etchings), in which he made fun of Emperor Napoleon I and his army. Alexander Ivanovich Terebenev (1815 - 1859, St. Petersburg). Studied at the Academy of Arts (1824-36) under V.I. Demut-Malinovsky, became a member in 1845. Participated in the decoration of a number of public buildings (including the Board of Trustees, and the Foster Home), and in the restoration of the interiors of the Winter Palace after the fire of 1837 (War Gallery of 1812, Field Marshal Hall.). In 1847-56 he supervised sculpture works in St. Petersburg palaces and gardens. His most important work is the 10 atlantes on the porch of the New Hermitage (granite, 1844-49), which became one of St. Petersburg's symbols. Among his other works are a statuette of Alexander Pushkin (bronze, 1837, the State Russian Museum), Duke Maximilian Leuchtenbergsky's tomb in the Chapel of the Maltese Order (1852), and a bust of actor V.A. Karatygin (1853-54, Necropolis of Artists). He was buried at Volkovskoe Orthodox Cemetery (grave not preserved).
