MALEVICH Kazimir Severinovich (1878-1935, Leningrad) artist, art theorist. He was trained at the studio of F. I. Rerberg (1905-10) in Moscow. He lived in Moscow until 1919. Had phases of enthusiasm for impressionism, primitivism, cubofuturism. The founder of suprematism, for the first time substantiated in his brochure From Cubism to Suprematism (1915). He participated in the exhibitions in Moscow: Jack of Diamonds, 1910, 1914-17, Asinine Tail, 1912, Target, 1913, and in St. Petersburg (Petrograd): the Union of Youth 1911-14, and a member of the society in 1913-14, Tram B, 1915), 0, 10, 1915. In 1917, he became a head of the art department of the Moscow Soviet of Soldiers' Deputies. In 1918-19 he was a participant in a group of anarchic-futurists, a member of the department of Fine Arts at the People's Commissariat for Education. He taught at the First and Second State Free Art Workshops (GSHM). In 1919, he left for Vitebsk where he became head of the group Approvers of New Art and taught at the State Free Art Workshops. From 1922, he lived in Petrograd (from 1923, at 2 Pochtamtskaya Street, where a memorial plaque is located. He created suprematic sketches of the new shapes and decorative drawings for the State Porcelain Factory during 1923. He became a head of the Museum of Artistic Culture and of the Institute of Artistic Culture in 1923-26. He was in charge of a department at the Institute of Art History from 1927 to1929 and of the experimental laboratory in the State Russian Museum in 1932-33. Collections of Malevich's work are kept in the Russian Museum, the canvas Black Square is in the Hermitage.
