IVANOV Alexander Andreevich (1806, St. Petersburg - 1858) artist. He studied at the Academy of Arts in 1817-28 under his father А. I. Ivanov and А. Е. Egorov; a member of the Academy from 1836. In 1830, he was sent to Italy as a retainer of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. He lived in Rome from 1831 onwards. Works of Petersburg period possess characteristic features of classicism, they are marked by emotionality and poetic inspiration in the treatment of ancient and Biblical subjects (Priam Asking Achilles for the Body of Hector, 1824, displayed at the State Tretyakov Gallery; Joseph Interpreting Dreams for the Bread Merchant and Cup-Bearer Imprisoned with Him, 1827, the State Russian Museum). His main work Christ Appearing to People (1837-57) one of the greatest pieces of Russian painting was created in Italy. Sketches for the canvas based on spontaneous impressions of animate nature possess a unique value; there are over 300 of them in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum and in other collections. On Ivanov's coming to St. Petersburg in 1858, the canvas was exhibited in the Winter Palace, later in the Academy of Arts. He spent the last six weeks of his life in St. Petersburg (he lived in M. P. Botkin's flat at 8 Third Line of Vasilievsky Island); the canvas was purchased by Emperor Alexander II after Ivanov's death, today it is in the State Tretyakov Gallery; a smaller copy is in the State Russian Museum. He was buried in the Necropolis of Artists. One can see a memorial plaque on the wall of the conference hall in the Academy of Arts (17 Universitetskaya Embankment).
