UNION OF ST. PETERSBURG DESIGNERS, an artistic public union, was established in 1990 as the Leningrad Branch of the Union of USSR Designers; in 1992 it became the regional organization of the Union of Russian Designers. It unites about 450 members most of which are graduates from the Artistic and Industrial Academy. The Union's chairman is Vladimir Sanzharov (since 1995). The Union aims at joining efforts to protect professional, financial and social rights of its members, as well as to develop scientific and artistic creativity. It is located at 8 Moika River Embankment (1842, architect Egor Dimmert). The Union has exhibition halls to present design projects, painting, graphics, arts and crafts items, and students' works. It holds annual competitions for the best designer's project, organizes professional training classes and classes for children and amateurs in different design areas. The Union publishes an Annual Information Bulletin.
