CRAFTS ACADEMY, State, Saint Petersburg (13 Solyanoy Lane) is one of the leading creative academies in Russia, originating from the Baron Stieglitz Central School of Technical Drawing (CSTD, 1876-1924). In October of 1943, the Leningrad Art School was created (LAS) for the development of architectural decoration of buildings. It was given the former buildings of CSTD and its museum. In October 1945 the Leningrad Crafts School (LCS) was opened on the basis of the LAS, and acquired the status of a high school in 1949 (LCHS). In 1953, it was given the name of the sculptor V.I. Mukhina. The school is associated with the work of such masters of fine arts as N.V. Baranov, P.D. Buchkin, S.V. Vasilkovsky, G.S. Vereysky, V.I. Ingal, V.V. Lebedev, M.G. Manizer, A.S. Nikolsky, A.F. Pakhomov, V.I. Shukhaev, et al. The school was transformed into the Crafts Academy in 1994. Its students studied at the faculties of design, monumental art and arts and crafts. The academy has a postgraduate program, workshops and a museum of arts and crafts. In 2002, over 1,000 students studied at the academy and over 500 teachers and employees were employed there.
