Solovyev Vladimir Sergeevich (1853-1900), philosopher, essayist, poet. Solovyev graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University in 1873. He defended his master"s thesis, Crisis in Western Philosophy, against the Positivists at St. Petersburg University in 1874. In 1880, he defended his doctoral thesis, Criticism of Abstract Principles. He gave lectures on the problems of philosophy in St. Petersburg from 1877, and became widely known as an original thinker. In a public lecture given in the hall of the Credit Society in Solyanoy Settlement, Solovyev urged the new Emperor Alexander III to forgive the murderers of Emperor Alexander II after the regicide of 1 March 1881, for which he lost the right to give public lectures. He then devoted himself to the academics and publication. Solovyev predominantly lived in Moscow but came from time to time to St. Petersburg. When in St. Petersburg, he either stayed at Europeiskaya Hotel or Angleterre Hotel, or with one of his acquaintances. He also lived for a short time at 11 Potemkinskaya Street during the 1890s, and at 10 Voznesensky Avenue. From the end of the 1880s, Solovyev was associated with the editors of the St. Petersburg journal Vestnik Evropy. He also edited the philosophy section of the Encyclopaedia published by Brockhaus - Efron.
