KOLTSOV Alexey Vasilievich (1809-1842), poet. Finished the first class of Voronezh School. He first came to St. Petersburg in 1836. He visited the city again in 1838 and 1840 (lived at V.G. Belinsky's, 15 Maly Avenue of Vasilievsky Island). Entered the literary circle on the recommendation of N.V. Stankevich (his first publication was the poem Ring, (Literaturnaya gazeta newspaper, 1831). St. Petersburg had a great impact on the poet and became his spiritual homeland. Among the Petersburg friends of Koltsov, V. A. Zhukovsky, V. F. Odoevsky, P. A. Vyazemsky and A. A. Kraevsky should be mentioned. It is in St. Petersburg that he met A. S. Pushkin in 1836; Koltsov's poem Forest is devoted to the memory of the poet (1837). The acclaimed Russian Songs gave him wide popularity. Many songs and romances by Koltsov were so popular that they went down as folk songs; his works were set to the music by A. S. Dargomyzhsky, M. P. Musorgsky et al. Only Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov have had more works put to music the Koltsov. Koltsov's works influenced N. A. Nekrasov, A. A. Fet, G. I. Uspensky. In 1846 the second collections of his poems prepared by Belinsky were issued posthumously in St. Petersburg. In 1939 Georgievskaya Street in Ozerki was renamed in the memory of Koltsov.
