DOBROLYUBOV Nikolay Alexandrovich (1836-1861, St. Petersburg), critic, publicist, poet. Studied at the Nizhegorodsky Theological Academy and Seminary. From 1853 lived in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the History and Philology Department of the Central Pedagogical Institute of the Petersburg University (1857). Dobrolyubov was one of the leading critics for the Sovremennik journal (from 1858 - editor of the critics and bibliography department), in 1859-60 was active as a compiler, editor and chief author of the Sovremennik journal satiric section — Svistok (Whistle); was known as N. G. Chernyshevsky's close associate. The significance of Dobrolyubov's role in Russian culture becomes apparent through a number of articles on the most important works of Russian literature (novels Oblomov by I. А. Goncharov, On the Eve by I. S. Turgenev, plays by A. N. Ostrovsky and others), which considerably contributed to their subsequent interpretation, employing the principles of realistic criticism developed by Dobrolyubov, according to which literary phenomena are considered a direct reflection of the real ones. Most famous of Dobrolyubov's Petersburg residences out of the total of 16 are 36 Liteiny Avenue, (memorial plaque) and 32. Buried at Literatorskiye mostki. An avenue (former Alexandrovsky) is named after Dobrolyubov. A monument to Dobrolyubov is erected at Bolshoy Avenue of the Petrogradskaya Side (1959, sculptor V. A. Sinaysky, architect S. B. Speransky). .
