VISHNEVSKY Vsevolod Vitalievich (1900, St. Petersburg - 1951), writer. Studied at the First Petersburg Gymnasium. Took part in the First World War of 1914-18, the revolutionary events of February and October 1917, the Civil War, the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940 and the defence of Leningrad of 1941-44. In besieged Leningrad (from 1944 in Moscow) was engaged in propaganda and publicist activities regularly gave talks on the radio; during Leningrad Siege, in 1942, wrote the play The Sea Has Stretched Wide in collaboration with A. A. Kron and V. B. Azarov and had it staged. Wrote the script for the film We are from Kronstadt (1936, directed by E.L. Dzigan), which was especially popular. Revolutionary heroic spirit and originality of style is apparent in Vishnevsky's first works (plays The Last Decided, 1931; Optimistic Tragedy, 1932, etc.) turned into political tendentiousness and banality of his later works' storylines. In 1942-44 Vishnevsky lived at 10 Professora Popova Street (memorial plaque). Some streets of St. Petersburg (until 1964 Tekstiley Street and Teryaeva Street) and Kronstadt have been named after Vishnevsky.
