FURNISHED APARTMENTS (affectionately known as “meblirashkas”). Furnished rooms for rent; mostly popular in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The price for a furnished apartment was equal to that of a second-class hotel. The majority of furnished apartments were located on Nevsky Prospect and adjacent streets (Pushkinskaya Street, Nadezhdinskaya Street, Karavannaya Street), and near railway stations. In the 1840s, the French troupe actress M-me Correge had a furnished apartment at the corner of Bolshaya Morskaya Street and Kirpichny Avenue, in the Jacot Residence, over the Legrand Restaurant (see Dussault Restaurant). According to the Regulation on the Establishment of Inns (1861), furnished apartments were considered the same as taverns. In the early 20th century, A.P. Rot's building of furnished apartment was located at 20 Pushkinskaya Street (Palais Royal; 1875-76, architect A.V. Ivanov). Furnished apartments were located in Nos. 10 and 23 of Serpukhovskaya Street (A.A. Blok and L.D. Mendeleeva met in one of them before their wedding). Well-known furnished apartments included the Belle Vue (64 Nevsky Prospect), the Paris (66 Nevsky Prospect / 28 Karavannaya Street; the P.I. Likhachev Residence, 1877-78, architect A.V. Ivanov), and the San Remo (90 Nevsky Prospect). On 23-30 November 1905, V.I. Lenin and N.K. Krupskaya lived incognito at San Remo. In April 1906, A. Bely stayed at the Belle Vue. After October 1917, all furnished apartments were liquidated.
