Konovnitsyn P.P., Civilian Governor

KONOVNITSYN Peter Petrovich (1743 or 1744-1796), statesman, Lieutenant General (1786). He graduated from the Naval Gentry Cadets' College in St. Petersburg (1762). In 1772-77, he was a voevoda (head of the district) in Akhtyrsk; in 1780-81, he served as Vice Governor of Moscow, in 1782-84, he was Governor of Tambov Region and in 1784-85 of Novgorod Region. In 1785-93, Konovnitsyn served as St. Petersburg civilian governor; during his time in office in St. Petersburg the building of the Grand Gostiny Dvor (1785) and the building of the City Duma (1787) were completed, a teachers' seminary and an orphanage at the city alms-house, and a number of primary schools were opened in St. Petersburg, Tosno, Peterhof, Krasnoe Selo. In 1793-96, he was Governor General of Arkhangelsk and Olonets.
