Shulgin D.I. governor-general in 1848-54

SHULGIN Dmitry Ivanovich (1785-1854, St. Petersburg), statesman and combat leader, infantry general (1848). After graduating from the boarding school of Moscow university (1800) he served in the Guards, took part in the Russo-French wars of 1805, 1806-07, 1812-14 and Russo-Swedish war of 1808-09. In 1825-30 he served as Chief of the Police in Moscow. Since 1830 the officer-in-chief of 18th infantry division, participated in supressing the Polish uprising of 1830-31. In 1846-47 St. Petersburg commandant, since 1847 St. Petersburg military governor-general and a member of empress Maria Fedorovna's Establishments' Board of Trustees. Since 1848, he had also been a member of State Council. During his administration, the area in the northern part of Peterburgskaya Side was equipped with modern amenities, the building of Blagoveshchensky Bridge (1850), Moskovsky Railway Station (1851) was completed, and the railroad line linking St. Petersburg and Moscow was opened (1851). Since 1853 a member of the council of Imperial Philantropic society. He lived in the state house on 39 Bolshaya Morskaya Street. Shulgin was buried at Lazarevskoe Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
