Trepov D.F. temporary governor-general in 1905

TREPOV Dmitry Fedorovich (1855-1906, St. Petersburg), statesman and combat leader, major-general (1900), major-general of His Imperial Majesty retinue (1903). The son of F.F. Trepov. He graduated from Page Corps school in St. Petersburg (1874), served in the Cavalry Guards. Trepov took part in the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78. The Chief of Police in Moscow in 1896-1905, he contributed to the introduction of legal working people' organizations, functioning under the police control. In January through October of 1905 he was a temporary governor-general in St. Petersburg (with the dictatorial powers) and at the same time the vice-minister of Internal Affairs. On January 19, 1905 he arranged the meeting of emperor Nicholas II with the specially chosen "representatives" of St. Petersburg workers in Ekaterininsky palace of Tsarskoe Selo; during which meeting the emperor "forgave" workers for the events of the "Bloody Sunday". Trepov assumed drastic measures for supressing revolutionary and liberal movement, in the meantime he put forward plans of various liberal reforms, and took part in the elaboration of the Manifesto fo October 17, 1905, proclaiming the introduction of civil liberties. On October 14, 1905 it was Trepov who gave the notorious order to the troops, "Give no blank shots, don't grudge rounds!"; soon after that he suggested the introduction of the political amnesty in the country. On October 26, 1905, he was dismissed from all his duties and appointed palace superintendent. Trepov enjoyed the absolute trust and favour of emperor Nicholas II, and influenced a number of ministerial appointments. He was buried in the St. Peter and Paul Court cathedral in New Peterhof.
