KRONSTADTSKY DISTRICT is an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg (Its territory administration is located at 36 Lenina Avenue,.) Formed in 1998, it was named after the city of Kronstadt, which is the district centre. It is located in Kotlin Island and 13 forts in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. Before the middle of 1990s, the territory was a border zone with limited access. The area is 16 sq.km with the population of 44,000 people (2003). The district has one municipal division of the city of Kronstadt. Communication of Kotlin Island with St. Petersburg was made by sea (during navigation, high-speed motor vessels perform trips to Kronstadt several times a day, and there is a ferry communication from Lomonosov.) The first stage of protective constructions of St. Petersburg from floods was opened in 1998 and provided land communication between Kronstadt and the mainland. The district includes Kronstadt Sea Factory, Light and Food Industry Enterprises, a naval hospital, and a navigation school. The Kronstadt Fortress is a unique military engineering monument. Among other monuments of architecture are St. Nicolas Naval Cathedral, the Admiralty, Arsenal, Gostiny Dvor (shopping arcade), Italian Palace, the Obvodny Canal and Petrovsky Park. There are monuments to Peter the Great, Faddey Bellinsgauzen, Stepan Makarov, submariners, et al. The Kronstadt tide-gauge is the oldest meter of the Baltic Sea level.
