KALININSKY DISTRICT is an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg. (Its territory administration is located at 13 Arsenalnaya Embankment.) The district was named in honour of Mikhail Kalinin in 1946. Its present-day borders were established in 1973. It is located in the northern part of St. Petersburg between Vyborgsky District (to the west) and Krasnogvardeysky District (to the east). The Neva River is its southern border. The Murinsky stream flows in its northern part. Its area is 39.3 sq.km with the population of 453,500 people (2003). The district houses seven municipal divisions: Grazhdanka, Academichesky, Piskarevka, Severny and Prometey, and municipal okrugs No.20 and No.21. The territory’s development started in the first half of the 18th century from building up lands along the Neva banks in the Polustrovo area. First industrial enterprises appeared in the southern part of the district in the second half of the 19th century. Spasskaya Myza homestead purchased by senator Ivan Kushelev in the beginning of the 19th century (he gave his name to villages Bolshaya and Malaya Kushelevka) was located in the territory of Kushelevka in the 18th century. In 1930s, the territory became an industrial area. The development of Piskarevka area started in the middle of the 19th century. Grazhdanka housed several settlements. A railroad line from Kushelevka station to Piskarevka crossing was constructed in the district territory at the turn of the 20th century. Vast undeveloped areas to the north of Grazhdanka and in Polustrovo were built up with standard residential complexes in 1960-70s. The district houses several metro stations, including Ploschad Lenina, Ploschad Muzhestva, Politekhnicheskaya, Academicheskaya, Grazhdansky Prospect, as well as railway stations, including Finlyandsky Railway Station, Kushelevka, Piskarevka, Ruchyi, Murino (along Priozersk and Ladoga Lake direction). Among the main thoroughfares are Sverdlovskaya and Arsenalnaya Embankments, Piskarevsky, Kondratievsky, Marshal Blucher, and Grazhdansky Avenues, and Rustaveli Street. The railroad line to Priozersk is laid along the district's eastern border; and the junction line between Vyborgsky and Priozersk direction is constructed along Suzdalsky Avenue in its northern part. Engineering enterprises dominate this territory, including Metal Works, Arsenal, Krasny Vyborzhets, Sverdlov, LOMO, Krasny Oktyabr, Tram Car Engineering Factory et al. Several health protection institutions are located in the district: St. Elizabeth Hospital, October Railway Hospital, and Wreden Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. The largest higher education institution is Polytechnic University (formerly, Polytechnic Institute). Among the main recreational projects are Piskarevsky Park, and Zenith Sports Palace. The largest monuments are Piskarev Memorial Cemetery and Lenin Monument at Finlyandsky Railway Station. Historical monuments include former summer mansions of Bezborodko and Durnovo (Sverdlovskaya Embankment).
