VYBORGSKY DISTRICT is an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg. (Its territory administration is located at 86 Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenue) The district was founded in 1917; and its present-day territorial borders were established in 1988. It is named after Vyborgskaya Side. It is located in the northern part of St. Petersburg between Primorsky District (to the west) and Kalinisky District (to the east). Vyborgsky District also covers formerly suburb towns of Pargolovo, Torfyanoye, Osinovaya Roscha, Novoselki, and Levashovo. The area of the district is 35.4 square km with the population of 487,000 people (2001). Eight municipal divisions exist in the district, including Sampsonievskoye, Svetlanovskoye, Sosnovskoye, Parnas, Shuvalovo-Ozerki, municipal okrug No. 15, and municipalities of Pargolovo and Levashovo. Settlements on the territory of the district existed since the 17th century (the oldest were located on the slopes of Pargolovo Heights.) Peasants from north-western Russia were moved here in the 18th century to populate villages, including Bolshaya and Malaya Vologda villages and Suzdalskoe village. The intensive development of Ozerki area started after the Partnership to Construct Summer Communities’ purchase of this territory in 1870. The development and construction of the southern part of the district (the proper Vyborgskaya Side) was started mostly by industrial enterprises at the beginning of the 18th century. The final planning of Udelnaya and Lesnaya areas was established in the middle of the 19th century. Old wooden buildings were completely replaced by new constructions in 1950-1970s. Standard residential neighbourhoods were constructed to the north of Poklonnaya Mount and to the east of Vyborgsky Highway. A large industrial area "Parnas" is being constructed in the northern part of the district from the early 1970s. Vyborgsky District houses 6 metro stations, including Udelnaya, Ozerki, Prosveschenia Avenue, Parnas (under construction), Vyborgskaya and Lesnaya. It also includes Lanskaya, Udelnaya, Ozerki, Shuvalovo, Pargolovo and Levashovo railway stations (lined from Finlayndsky Railway Station in the direction of Vyborg). Among the main thoroughfares of the district are Bolshoy Sampsonievsky and Lesnoy Avenues, and Vyborgskaya Embankment connecting new neighbourhoods to the city centre and Vyborgsky Highway leading to suburbs and Scandinavia Highway. Other large thoroughfares include Kantemirovskaya Street, Thoreza, Svetlanovsky, Kultury, Prosveschenia, Severny, Lunacharskogo, and Engelsa Avenues. Its western border includes the railway to Vyborg. The junction line between Vyborg and Priozersk directions is laid in its northern part (along Suzdalsky Avenue). Industrial enterprises include Svetlana, Positron, Russian Diesel, and Klimov factories, Krasnaya Nit textile integrated works, Petersburg Textile Factory, Azart Confectionary Plant, Baltika Brewery Plant, Parnas Meat-packing plant, Pepsi-Cola, et al. The district houses a broad range of research and design engineering organizations, including Physical and Engineering Institute, Television Research Institute, geophysical observatory and multiple scientific research institutes (NII) and defence enterprises. There are five institutions of higher education: the Army Medical College, the Forestry Engineering Academy, the Paediatric Medical Academy, Military Physical Training Institute, and Trade and Economic Institute. Several large hospitals are located in this territory, including St. George Hospital, Regional Clinical Hospital, RAS Hospital, and others. The district boasts a large cultural complex – the Vyborgsky Recreational Centre. Among other recreational projects are Sosnovka Park, Forestry Engineering Academy Park, Shuvalovo Park in Pargolovo, Suzdal Lakes and beaches. The district houses the following architectural and historical monuments: St. Sampson's Cathedral, Army Medical College buildings, Bateninsky Residential Community, monuments to Peter the Great, Sergey Botkin, Alexander Matrosov, Feodosy Smolyachkov, and others.
