BOBRINSKY Alexey Alexandrovich (1852, St. Petersburg 1927) Count, statesman and public figure, major land-owner, businessman, archaeologist, historian, senator (1896), Arch-Hoffmeister (1916). He was a son of Count Alexander A. Bobrinsky. In 1870-72, he studied at the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University (enrolment discontinued due to illness). From 1873, he served at the office of the Council of Ministers. From 1875, he was St. Petersburg District Marshal of Nobility. In 1878-98, he was St. Petersburg Provincial Marshal of the Nobility (acting as of 1876). Bobrinsky was in charge of the Council of the Russian-English bank in 1914-18. He was in charge of the Archaeological Commission in 1886-1917 and served as a member of the Committee for Studying Central and Eastern Asia. Bobrinsky was the Vice President of the Academy of Arts (1889-90). He was also in charge of the Russian Museum Society. He was a honourable guardian of St. Petersburg Guardianship (from 1892), and supervised St. Petersburg orphanages of the Department of Institutions of Empress Maria (1893-96). He was a member of the Council of the Emperor's Charitable Society. From 1894, he was the Head of the Free Economic Society; Bobrinsky also was a member of the Agricultural Council of the Ministry of Agriculture, and was in charge of the Handicraft Committee. In 1899 Bobrinsky was a member of the Special Office of the State Council for Provisional Consideration of Complaints concerning the rulings of the Senate. Bobrinsky was in charge of the Council of United Nobility (1906-12). He was a member of the Russian Assembly (in 1908-10, a member of its Council). Bobrinsky served in the Third State Duma from Kiev Province (1907-12), and an assistant (deputy director) of the rightist faction. He was a member of the Bureau for Mutual Awareness and Joint Actions of the Rightist Activists. From 1 January 1912, he was a member of the State Council (from 1915, head of its rightist group). Bobrinsky was in charge of the Committee for Arranging the Celebration of the Tercentennial Anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty (1912). He was in charge of the Special Conference for Joint Efforts for People’s Sobriety (January-April 1916). Bobrinsky also served as an assistant (deputy director) of the Minister Of Home Affairs (March-July 1916), and Minister of Agriculture (July-November 1916). On 1 January 1917, he was again appointed to the Office of the State Council. In 1918, he left for Kiev. In 1918-19, he was a member of the Council for Unification of Russia. From 1879, he led archaeological excavations in the South of Russia, examining over 1,000 burial mounds. The golden Scythian comb found by Bobrinsky in the burial mound of Solokh is now kept in the Special Gold Treasury of the State Hermitage. He established (1901) the News of the Imperial Archaeological Commission. He gathered a collection of ancient bronze. Bobrinsky presented a part of his collections to the Moscow Society of Natural History and to Kiev Museum of Antiquities. Bobrinsky emigrated in 1919. In St. Petersburg he lived at 58 Galernaya Street.
