CHKHEIDZE Nikolay Semenovich (party pseudonym Carlo) (1864-1926), political figure. After graduating from Kutaisi gymnasia (1887) he entered Novorossiisk University (Odessa), but was soon expelled due to his participation in students' disorders. He then entered Kharkov veterinary institute, from which he was also expelled in 1888. Chkheidze took part in social-democratic movement in Transcaucasia, had been a Menshevik as of 1903. The deputy of the 3rd (1907-12) and the 4th (1912-17) State Duma, he was at the head of its social-democratic faction (after the split of the faction in 1913 - the head of the menshevist faction), was a member of Masonic Duma lodge. Had been a member of Russian board of the Menshevist Organization Committee as of 1915. After February revolution of 1917 a member of the Provisional Committee of State Duma, a chairman of the Executive Committee of Petrograd Soviet (in February through August), a chairman of All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the 1st convocation (as of June). Since August of 1917, a member of the Central Committee of Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party, the fusionist of the Left. After October of 1917 he came back to Transcaucasia, where he became one of the founders of Georgian Democratic Republic; had been a chairman of Georgian Constituent Assembly since March of 1919. Since 1921 he had been living in France as an emigrant; committed suicide.
