Matsievich L.M. (1877-1910), engineer, pilot

MATSIEVICH Lev Markovich (1877-1910, St. Petersburg), military engineer, one of the first Russian aviators. Graduated from Kharkov Technological Institute (1901), Nikolaevskaya Naval Academy (1906), completed officer underwater swimming course (1907) and studied at the Farman School of Aviation (France, 1910). From 1908 served in the Marine Technical Committee, from 1909 in the Department of Air Fleet. Matsievich was a theorist and initiator of military applications of aviation. In 1910 carried out the first night flight with fellow aviator М. N. Efremov. Died on September 24, performing a demonstration flight at the All-Russian Aeronautics Day celebration at the Commandants Aerodrome, becoming the first casualty in Russian aviation history. Tens of thousands of people attended his funeral at the Nikolskoe cemetery. In 1912 at the site of Matsievich's death a commemorative stone was placed (architect I.A. Fomin), later transported to the square named in his honour, 1982 ( Lva Matsievicha Square, at the intersection of Serebristy Boulevard and Kotelnikov Lane).
