GOLITSYN Mikhail Mikhailovich (1675-1730), Prince, military commander, Field Marshal General (1725). Commenced his military career as a private soldier of the Semenovsky Regiment. During the Great Northern War of 1700-21 excelled in the assault of Noteburg (1702), participated in the capture of Nyenschantz and the foundation of St. Petersburg (1703), fought at Lesnoy (1708) and Poltava (1709), and in 1710 took part in the seizure of Vyborg. From 1714 commander of troops in Finland, inflicted a number of defeats on the Swedish army and conquered the entire territory; in 1714 battled at Gangut, in 1720 crushed the Swedish fleet in the battle of Grengam. In 1721-23 commanded troops in St. Petersburg, in 1723-28 - in Ukraine. In 1728 - 30 was appointed president of the Military Collegium, senator, member of the Supreme Privy Council. In 1730 was engaged in an endeavour to limit autocracy, after its failure resigned.
