LAZAREV Mikhail Petrovich (1788-1851), navigator, admiral (1843). Graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps in 1803 (17 Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment, memorial plaque installed), and was sent on scholarship to Great Britain. Upon returning, he served during Russian-Swedish War of 1808-09. During the Patriotic War of 1812 he served on the Phoenix frigate. He sailed around the, from Kronstadt to Alaska and back, as a captain of the Suvorov ship in October, 1813 - June, 1816. He captained the Peaceful sloop on an overseas expedition led by F.F. Bellinsgauzen, which discovered Antarctica and a number of islands in 1819-21. For his services he was promoted by two ranks to Captain of the Second Rank. He undertook his third world cruise, from Kronstadt to the coasts of North and South America and back, heading the Cruiser frigate, under the command of Lazarev, and the Ladoga sloop. He was promoted to Captain of the First Rank for his merits. From 1826, he was captain of the Azov battleship. From 1827, he was the Executive Officer of Rear Admiral L.P. Heiden's command, which was sent to the Mediterranean Sea. He acted heroically in the Navara Sea Battle (1827), and participated in the siege of Dardanelles during the Russian-Turkish War of 1828-29. He commanded the Baltic Fleet detachment in 1830-31. From 1832 and for the rest of his life, he served on the Black Sea Fleet. An embankment in St. Petersburg was named after Lazarev in 1952 (Admiral Lazarev Embankment, formerly Koltovskaya Embankment).
