ATAMAN LIFE GUARDS REGIMENT (from 1878 – of His Highness the Crown Prince (tsesarevich), formed in 1775 numbering 500 servicemen as the Ataman Regiment of the Don Army, in 1803 reorganised as a 1000-men formation. With the designation of the Crown Prince (tsesarevich) as the patron of the Don Cossack troops regiment it was named Cossack Ataman the Heir’s Regiment, from 1832 on, it regularly despatched two squadrons to St. Petersburg, the Life Guards Ural Company was also assigned to the regiment. From 1855 it bore the name Life Ataman His Highness Crown Prince's Regiment. In 1859 it received the privilege of the New Guards, from 1878 – of the Old Guards. In 1874-84 together with the Cossack Life Guards Regiment formed the Combined Cossack Life Guards Regiment. Participated in the campaign against Nogai Tartars(1783), in the wars with Turkey 1787-91, 1806-12, 1828-29, 1877-78, in the Orenburg Campaign (1801), in the wars with France of 1806-07 and 1812-14, in suppressing of Polish Insurrections of 1830-31 and 1863-64. In St. Petersburg the Regiment was stationed together with the Cossack Life Guards Regiment. After October 1917 was nominally disbanded (restored in 1919 within the White Army).
