ANNA LEOPOLDOVNA (1718-1746), granddaughter of Tsar Ivan V, grand-niece of Emperor Peter the Great, mother of Emperor Ivan VI. Nee as Elisabeth Catharina Christine, Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, wife of Prince Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig and Luneburg-Wolfenbuttel. Since 1733, she lived in St. Petersburg at the Court of Empress Anna Ioannovna, who had left the throne to Anna Leopoldovna's son. After the overthrow led by E.I. Biron, on 9 November 1740, she became Regent of the Russian Empire, replacing her underage son, the Emperor. On 25 November 1741, she was dethroned by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, and exiled to Kholmogory (near Arkhangelsk), where she died. In 1746, the Anna Leopoldovna's body was transported to St. Petersburg and buried in the Blagoveschenskaya Burial Vault of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
