NIKOLAY NIKOLAEVICH the Younger (1856, St. Petersburg 1929), Grand Prince, General of Cavalry (1900), Adjutant General (1894). Son of Grand Prince Nikolay Nikolaevich the Elder. Graduated from the Nikolaevsky Engineering School (1872) and Nikolaevskaya Academy of the General Staff (1876). Rendered military service in the Hussar Life Guards Regiment. Participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. In 1895-1905 Inspector General of the Cavalry, extensively contributed to boosting the combat capacity of the army and improving recruitment policy. In 1905-14 Commander-in-Chief of Guards Troops and the St. Petersburg Military District (replacing Grand Prince Vladimir Alexandrovich in this post), simultaneously, in 1905-08 served as Chairman of the State Defence Assembly. Trustee of the Assembly of Army and Naval Officers (from 1909). From August of 1914 through August 1915 served as Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army, thereafter Governor General in the Caucasus and Commander of the Caucasian Front. 2(15).3.1917 reappointed Commander-in-Chief, but could not assume his duties. Resided in his Crimean estate. In 1919 emigrated, declared himself the guardian of the Russian throne. Owned a palace (1910-13) and a rental house at 2 Petrovskaya Embankment, in St. Petersburg (1909; designed by A.S. Khrenov).
