BIRON (Buhren) Ernst Johann (1690-1772), Count and Chief Chamberlain (from 1730), Duke of Courland and Semigalia (from 1737), regent of infant Emperor Ivan VI (from 23.10.1740). A nobleman of Courland; from the early 1720s, he was a consistent attendant of Anna Ivannovna's, and enjoyed her favor. Upon arriving in Russia, he was not officially part of state administration, possessing instead unrestricted influence on the Empress and interfering in state affairs directly through her; this period came to be known as the Bironovshchina Period. On 9 November 1740, as the result of a Palace coup, he was deprived of regency and exiled. In 1762, he returned from exile, settled in Courland, and acquired ducal rights.
