IN COMMEMORATION of the 250th ANNIVERSARY of LENINGRAD, a state award of the USSR. Instituted according to the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR's Decree of 16 May 1957, and awarded to the recipients of the Defence of Leningrad medal, as well as to those who made a significant contribution to Leningrad's reconstruction and labour achievements, on condition that the recipients had lived in Leningrad for five or more years. The decoration was conferred upon 1.430.000 people. The medal consists of a brass disk measuring 32 millimetres in diameter. Its obverse side features an image of the monument to V.I. Lenin on Lenin Square, against the background of a shining five-pointed star, the Neva, and the Chief Admiralty; the side also contains images of a laurel bough, a hammer and sickle, banners, and the inscription, "In Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of Leningrad." The reverse medal's side outlines the view of Smolny over its propylaeum (vestibule entrance), the Decorations of Leningrad, and a legend which reads, "Long Live the Hero City! 250." The ribbon of the medal is blue with white stripes along the edges, and a red stripe (containing two yellow stripes along the edges) in the centre.
