OPENING OF THE NEVA RIVER FOR NAVIGATION, an official holiday from the beginning of the 18th - beginning of the 20th century, celebrating the Neva's clearing from ice and the beginning of the Neva Shipping. On the day of the Opening of the Neva River Navigation Emperor Peter the Great sailed across the Neva River first, followed by mass boating festival, decorative lighting and balls. Since the middle of the 18th century the first to row across the Neva River was the commander of the Peter and Paul Fortress, he sailed from the fortress to the Winter Palace, entered the palace and presented the Emperor (or Empress) with a bowl with the Neva water.
