UNIVERSITETSKAYA EMBANKMENT (prior the end of the 18th century, Kadetskaya Embankment, until 1887 - Bolshaya Neva River Embankment), is situated on the right bank of the Bolshaya Neva, between Birzhevaya Square and Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island. On the opposite bank, lies Admiralteyskaya Embankment. Universitetskaya Embankment dates back to the beginning of the 18th century; Dvortsovy Bridge (Palace Bridge) and Leitenanta Shmidta Bridge link it with Neva's left bank. In the beginning of the 18th century, A.D. Menshikov's palace (No. 15, see Menshikovsky palace) and Peter the Great's palace (No. 11) were erected there. In 1718-34, the building of Kunstkammer was built (No. 3; today it houses the museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, and the museum of M.V. Lomonosov). In 1722-42, the building of the Twelve Collegia (No. 7) was erected; it has been housing St. Petersburg State University since 1835. In the 1720s, the house No. 21 was built based on D.Trezzini's design project (rebuilt in 1831, 1871-74 and 1949). In 1756-59, the wing and the manege of the Gentry Infantry Cadet Corps (No. 13; see Cadet corps) were built, as were in 1764-88, the building of the Academy of Arts (No. 17), in 1783-85, the building of the Russian Academy of Sciences (house No. 5), in 1794, the rector's wing of the University (No. 9; rebuilt in 1840-42 by architect A.F. Schedrin), in 1826-32, the southern warehouse of the Stock Exchange (No. 1; Zoological Museum has occupied the building since 1896, and by Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences since 1931). In 1804-10 and 1831-34, the granite embankment was made in 1832-34 a quay (architect K.A. Ton) was built where the Egyptian sphinxes were put. In 1818, between the First and Second lines of Vasilievsky Island, Rumyantsevsky Obelisk was installed after being transferred from the Field of Mars. In 1866-67, Rumyantsevsky Garden was laid out around the obelisk, in the 1880s, fountains were opened there.
