Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Embankments

SINOPSKAYA EMBANKMENT, on the left bank of the Neva River, from Smolny Avenue to Alexandra Nevskogo Square. In the first half of the 18th century, it was called Naberezhnaya Street or Nevskaya Rozhdestvenskaya Embankment, in 1887-1952 - Kalashnikovskaya Embankment (after the corn-merchants Kalashnikov); the modern name was given to commemorate the victory of the Russian Fleet over Turkish Fleet at Sinop Bay in the Black Sea in 1853. In 1970, the former Ambarnaya Street (from Khersonskaya Street) was attached to Sinopskaya Embankment. The embankment appeared in the first half of the 18th century during the construction of Alexander Nevsky Monastery (today Alexander Nevsky Lavra). In the late 18th century, there was the manor belonging to architect N.A. Lvov (close to what is now building 32). In the 19th century, St. Petersburg river port with the Bread Quay, storehouses and industrial enterprises was developed on this site. Among preserved buildings are St. Nicholas Chapel (building 34, 1833, architect A.I. Ochakov), building 36 (1830, reconstructed in 1870), building 52 (former firm of E. Bashkirov, 1889, architect A.V. Ivanov). In the second half of the 19th century, a brewery, distillery plant (building 56-58, today Liviz Limited Liability Company), Nevskaya Textile Mill (today Spinning Factory) were constructed. After the construction of Aleksander Nevsky Bridge in 1960-65, the reconstruction of the embankment was undertaken in the 1970s. In the 1980s, asphalt work, a protecting retaining wall and stone facing with a metal fence were added (project leader - architect B.A. Kataev). On Sinopskaya Embankment, there is the Moscow Hotel and an international telephone communications station (1974, architect D.S. Goldgor et al.).
