KUTUZOVA EMBANKMENT, located on the left bank of the Neva River, running from Liteiny Avenue to the Fontanka River Embankment. In the 18th - first half of the 19th centuries, it formed a part of the Dvortsovaya Embankment; from 1860, it was known as the Gagarinskaya Embankment (after Gagarinsky Penkovy Buyan, a hemp and flax storehouse on the right bank of the Neva River on the Petrogradskaya Side); from 1902, it was called Frantsuzskaya Embankment (after the French Embassy, building no. 10); from 1918, it was called Zhoresa Embankment (after J. Jaures, an important figure of the French and International Socialist); and from September 1945, it bore its current name after M.I. Kutuzov, who left his daughter's house for the army in 1812 (building no. 30). In 1781-84, the F.V. Bauer Residence was constructed in a Classicist style (building no. 36, architect Y.M. Felten); and in 1858, the Count A.G. Kushelev-Bezborodko Residence was built (building no. 24, architect R.R. Henrichsen). In 1900-01, building no. 22 was constructed (architect B.I. Girshovich), which today houses the Soviet of War, Army, and Labour Veterans. A.N. Olenin lived in building no. 10 in 1827-30, where Alexander Pushkin, P.A. Vyazemsky, and A. Mickiewicz used to visit him. In 1952-60, Academician A.F. Ioffe worked in this building, at the Institute of Semi-Conductors (today, the Institute for Applied Astronomy). Alexander Pushkin lived in building no. 32 in 1834-36, where he worked on The History of Pugachev. Writer B.A. Lavrenev lived in building no. 12 in 1934-42.
