GRIBOYEDOVA CANAL (the Ekaterininsky Canal in 1767-1923) starts from the Moika River at the Field of Mars and flows into the Fontanka River at Malo-Kalinkin Bridge. It is 5 km long and 32 meters wide with water flow of 3.1 - 3.4 m3. The right bank of the Griboyedova Canal behind Lermontovsky Avenue and up to Repin Square runs into Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue. The canal flows along the Krivusha River (old name - the Glukhaya River) which was connected in its head to the Moika River in 1739. In 1764-90, the canal was deepened and covered with granite embankments (constructed by engineers Illarion Golenishchev-Kutuzov, Fedor Bauer, et al.) In 1954-56, the embankment from the Moika River to Italyanskaya Street was faced with granite. The Grivoyedov Canal"s embankments are one-way traffic streets. The Canal is spanned with 21 bridges. In the middle of the 18th century, No 40/26 was built (a monument to Baroque architecture). The Assignation Bank was constructed in 1783-90 (No 30-32, architect Giacomo Quarenghi); and Maly Gostiny Dvor (No 26, architect Giacomo Quarenghi) was built in 1790s. The future Decembrists Prince Alexander Baryatinsky, Iosif Poggio, and Peter Svistunov were brought up in the House of the Jesuits Society, built in 1801-05 (No 8, architect Luigi Rusca). Several apartment houses of the beginning of the 19th century have been preserved on the embankment (NN 87-91, 106, 119). The police station (Sjezhiy Dom) of Kolomenskaya Part was constructed in 1840s (No 139, architect Rudolf Zhelyazevich). Numbers 42 and 47 were built under the project of architect Alexander Pehl. Architect Egor Sokolov lived in No 105 (reconstructed in 1853, architect Auguste Poireau). Alexander Griboyedov lived in No 104/25 in 1816-18; the Theatre School was located in No 95 until 1836. Actors Alexey Yakovlev and Yakov Bryansky lived in No 97 owned by directorate of the Theatre School. In 1819-20, No 109 housed the meetings of the Green Lamp Literary Society. Decembrist Peter Kakhovsky lived and was arrested in the Naples hotel (No 79/23, reconstructed in 1855-56, architect Avgust Lange) in 1825. Here, young Nikolay Gogol burnt his first book Hans Kuhelgarten. In 1829-31, Gogol lived here in No 69/18; in 1861 here lived the writer Gleb Uspensky. Nikolay Chernyshevsky lived in No 38/1 in 1846. Composer Mily Balakirev lived in No 116 in 1850s. In the second half of the 19th century, the embankments of the Griboyedov Canal were built over with multistory commercial houses (No 71, 1888, architect Pavel Suzor; No 132, 1882, architect Avgust Ackerman; and No 158, 1912, architect Ippolit Pretro), public houses (No 13, the House of Mutual Credit Society, 1890, architect Pavel Suzor; No 21/28, the Zinger Trading House, 1902-04, architect Pavel Suzor, today, the House of Books; No 2а, the house of the Folk Arts School, 1915, architects Innokenty Bezpalov and Nikolay Lansere, sculptor Yakov Troupyansky; and No 2/2, 1914-17, architects Leonty Benois and Sergey Ovsyannikov, today, the reserve building of the State Russian Museum. The commercial house of Nadezhda Bezpbrazova was constructed in 1903-05 (No 50-54, architect Yuly Benois). Fedor Dostoyevsky lived in No 61 in 1861-63. In 1881, a secret office of the executive committee of the Narodnaya Volya was located in No 78/25. On March 1, 1881, Alexander II was mortally wounded in an explosion on the embankment next to Mikhailovsky Garden. Holy Resurrection Cathedral was erected at the place of offence in 1883-1907. In 1896-97 Vera Komissarzhevkaya lived here in No 72 (1907, architect Vladimir Lipsky); and choreographer Mikhail Fokin lived in No 109. The writer Dmitry Grigorovich lived in 1893-99 in No 77 (1872, architect Alexander Golm). The Krivoye Zerkalo (Distorting Mirror) Theatre was located in No 90 in 1912-17. Ilya Repin lived and worked in No 135/3 in 1882-95, and artist Osip Braz resided in No 89. Architect R. I. Kitner lived in his own house No 81. The Azerbaijan composer Uzeir Gadzhibekov lived in No 126 in 1913. In 1920-22, the Opera, Drama and Ballet theatre of the Baltic Fleet Political Directorate performed in No. 90. The Baltic Fleet symphony orchestra directed by Samuil Samosud premierred here on June 24, 1920. The Belgoskino stuio was located here in 1927-39. It produced films Lieutenant Kizhe, Fortune Hunters, Beethoven"s Concert, and Kastus Kalinovsky. At different times, the "writers" superstructure" of No 9/2 was the home for writers Olga Forsch, Mikhail Zoschenko, Veniamin Kaverin, Ivan Sokolov-Mikitov, Vera Ketlinskaya, Mikhail Kozakov, Leonid Borisov, Leonty Rakovsky, Boris Zhitkov, Mikhail Slonimsky, Vissarion Sayanov, Vyacheslav Shishkov, Evgeny Schwarz, and poets Vsevolod Rozhdestvensky, Boris Likharev, Elena Vechtomova, Ilya Avramenko, L.N. Braun, M.I. Komissarova, and literary critics V.V. Tomashevsky, Boris Eichenbaum, and Ilya Gruzdev. The Institute of Archeology was located in No 14 before 1914. Andrey Yatsevich lived and died of starvation in No 69 in 1942.
