Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Side Streets, Lanes

KUZNECHNY LANE, connects Zagorodny Avenue and Vladimirskaya Square with Ligovsky Avenue. In the 1740s, this territory was settled by blacksmiths serving the court. In the 1760s, the Church of Our Lady of Vladimir was erected along the street. Buildings nos. 2-12, constructed in the 19th century, form a compact section of buildings reaching as far as Marata Street. In the 1820s, the St. Nicholas’ Edinoverie Church was constructed, and, almost a century later, the Nikolskoe Real School near it (building no. 14а, 1911-12, architect I.I. Yakovlev). Past prominent residents of Kuznechny Lane include F.M. Dostoevsky (building no. 5, today his memorial apartment-museum), N.S. Leskov (building no. 15), and F. I. Chaliapin (Palais Royal Hotel, building no. 18). In 1925-27, the Kuznechny Market was constructed (architects S.O. Ovsyannikov and A.S. Pronin), and in 1955 the Vladimirskaya Metro station went into operation (architect A.V. Zhuk and others).
