Yury Gagarin Avenue

Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Avenues

YURY GAGARIN AVENUE, between Blagodatnaya Street and Moskovskoe Freeway. From the 1910s to 1961 the avenue bore the name Narymsky Avenue, after the village of Narym in Tomskaya Region. The present-day name was attached to the avenue in honour of the first cosmonaut Y.A. Gagarin (1934-68). The avenue is an important arterial road for the city. The corner of Yury Gagarin Avenue and Blagodatnaya Street still accommodates the buildings of the 1930s, though most part of the buildings date to the 1950s-70s; house No. 8 lodges the Peterburgsky Sports and Concert Complex.
