ENGELSA AVENUE, a part of Vyborgskoe Freeway until 1918, running from Novosiltsevsky Lane past Third Verkhny Lane; the avenue is an extension of Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenue. The avenue was called so in honour of German socialist F. Engels (1820-95). It appeared in the first quarter of the 18th century as part of the road leading to Vyborg. In the 1970s, the avenue was extended past Poklonnogorskaya Street and crossed the site of Prigorodny State Farm. In the early 19th century, the site of present-day Chelyuskintsyev Park laid out in 1934 was occupied by a dairy-farm of the Department of Imperial Lands. In the 1890s, Svetlana factory was established here (house No. 25-27). Tramway lines built along the avenue were put into operation in 1926. House No. 1 constitutes a complex of buildings pertaining to the former Orlovo-Novosiltsevskaya Almshouse (an outpatients clinic at present; 1833-41, architect I.I. Charlemagne), houses Nos. 4 and 6 were built in the territory of the Lanskys' former estate (mid-19th century). The intersection of Engelsa Avenue, Svetlanovsky Avenue and Second Murinsky Avenue is marked by the ensemble of Svetlanovskaya Square: house No. 23 (1961, architects L.L. Schreter, V.I. Zausskaya), house No. 21 and house No. 25 (1950s-60s, architects V.F. Belov, M.P. Savkevich, L.L. Schreter). In the 1950s, houses Nos. 37 and 39 were built (architects A.Y. Macheret and L.S. Chupina), while house No. 50 was constructed in 1998 for the Voenvrach Housing Co-operative (architects N. Apostol et al.). Houses Nos. 55 (architects G.A. Simonov, P.V. Abrosimov, A.F. Khryakov) and 68 (architect A.V. Zhuk) were constructed in the 1950s. House No. 73, belonging to the superannuation fund was built in the 1990s. House No. 83 and house No. 85, which used to be a store and a tea-room of merchant M.E. Bashkirov (1903) were built in the Art Nouveau style. The wooden house No. 92 was occupied by M.I. Kalinin in 1917. In the 1910s, at the intersection of Engelsa Avenue and present-day Severny Avenue there was a house of P.A. Badamaev, professor of Tibetan medicine (not preserved). Engelsa Avenue also accommodates Svetlanovsky Department Store (house No. 21), the Engineering School of Electronics (Radio Polytechnic School or Radiopolitekhnikum, house No. 23), Children's Art School (house No. 74), a cycle track (house No. 81, 1954-56), Poklonnaya Gora (Poklonnaya Mountain) cultural and business centre (house No. 89, architects J.M. Vierzhbitsky, L.K. Rabinovich et al.), a tower building near Ozerki Metro Station (2002, architects V.F. Drozdov et al.) and the Bada-Boom trade-entertainment complex (1999, the first building of house No. 111).
