TIKHORETSKY AVENUE, called Benua Avenue from 1909 to 1952, from Gidrotekhnikov Street to Severny Avenue. The avenue was laid in the early 20th century within the limits of Sosnovka and named after architect Y.Y. Benois (Benua in Russian transliteration), who owned the Forest Dairy-Farm and a summer residence there (house No. 17). The present-day appellation of the avenue is associated with the city of Tikhoretsk situated in Krasnodar Territory. The odd-numbered side of Tikhoretsky Avenue from Svetlanovsky Avenue to Severny Avenue runs along the park of Sosnovka. Most of the buildings of the avenue pertain to the 1930s-80s. Deep in the area, there is a monumental building of the Military University of Communication (house No. 3, the 1930s, architect N.F. Brovkin), which has a monument to V.I. Chapaev in front of its facade (1943, sculptor M.G. Manizer, architect N.F. Brovkin). In the 1980s, the building of the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was erected (house No. 4, architects D.K. Enikeev et al.). At the intersection of Tikhoretsky Avenue and Svetlanovsky Avenue the building of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics was built in 1973-86 (house No. 21). The original cylindrical tower of the institute is surmounted with a kind of a crown made of reinforced concrete pointed boards.
