Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Avenues

RIMSKOGO-KORSAKOVA AVENUE, between Sadovaya Street and Repina Square. Known since 1739 as a part of the road to Ekateringof, in 1770-1923 - Ekateringofsky Avenue. It was renamed after composer N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The even-numbered side of the avenue ends with building 24 - St. Isidore of Yuryev Church of the Estonian Orthodox Community (1903-08, architect А.А. Poleshchuk), later - Griboedova Canal Embankment. On the lot between the avenue (building 22) and the canal are the former barracks of a guards Company. At the Sailors' Theatre, V. V. Mayakovsky read his poem Left March for the first time on 18 December 1918. In building 1 (1899-1900, architect A.I. Nosalevich), the first trade union of clerks functioned in 1905. Building 35 was owned by V.N. Vsevolozhsky (reconstructed in 1845-47, architect J.D. Corsini), building 37 belonged to the Benois. Building 87 (1912, architect G.Y. Levi) houses the factory of diagram papers. Building 25/15 at the corner of Srednaya Podyacheskaya Street is described in F.M. Dostoevsky' novel Crime and Punishment as "the house of the pawnbroker". In building 65 (1893-96, architect I.N. Iors), Lithuanian artists and composer M.K. Ciurlionis lived in 1908-09; among the tenants of building 97 there was artist K.A. Somov who lived there in 1887-1925. In 1995, the monument The Nose of Major Kovalev (the idea of director R. Gabriadze) was placed on building 11/36 (at the corner of Voznesensky Avenue).
