PISKAREVSKY AVENUE between Sverdlovskaya Embankment and the upper Okhta River near Novaya Village. It crosses Polyustrovo, Piskarevka (hence the name), and Ruchi. The section up to the present-day Revolyutsii Freeway was laid in the early 19th century known as Porokhovsky Lane and Kushelevsky Lane from the 1840s to 1871. The other section up to the present-day Rustavelli Street was first known as Okhtenskaya, or Bolsheokhtinskaya, Road and was renamed as Imperatora Petra Velikogo Avenue in 1900s. The whole avenue was known as Lenina Avenue from the 1920s to 1940s and renamed as Piskarevsky Avenue in the 1940s. Buildings of Okhtinskaya Cotton Mill were erected at number 3 in 1847. Today, they belong to Vozrozhdenie Open Joint-Stock Company. Peter the Great Hospital was built with Petrine Baroque facades by architects L. A. Ilyin, A. I. Klein, A. V. Rosenberg at number 47 in 1907-25. Today, it accommodates Mechnikov St. Petersburg Medical Academy and Peter the Great Hospital. A monument to Mechnikov by sculptor L. V. Shervud was erected in 1936. Piskarevsky Avenue served as the main link between Piskarevskoe Memorial Cemetery and the city centre during the post-war period. Standard residential houses were built in the avenue in 1950-60s with architects O. I. Guryev and A. V. Vasilyev as project managers. The Albrecht Research Institute of Prosthetics was erected by architects B. I. Kozyrev, V. G. Filippov, et al. at 50 Bestuzhevskaya Street near Piskarevsky Avenue in the second half of 1970s. In the avenue there is a gymnastic centre of Dinamo Sports Society at number 23, Kulon Works at number 25, and Stekvar Research Institute of Silica Glass at number 63.
