Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Avenues

KOSMONAVTOV AVENUE is located between Kuznetsovskaya Street and Svirskaya Street, running across the Alexandrovskaya Settlement and Srednyaya Rogatka. Laid out in the 1960s and named in honour of Soviet cosmonauts, its major thoroughfare is Moskovsky Avenue. Since the early 20th century, streets crossing the territory of Kosmonavtov Avenue include Eniseyskaya Street (present day Basseynaya Street) and Plevenskaya Street. The territory saw major development in the 1960-80s. Constructions that appeared during the period include the Peterburgsky Sports and Concert Complex (8 Gagarina Avenue), a health and fitness centre with a pool (house No 35, 1982, project supervisor, architect E. K. Zemchenko), an apartment building with 1000 flats (house 40, early 1970s, project supervisors, architects V. V. Popov, А. D. Katz), and a technical vocational school (house 96, 1970s, architecture workshop No 10 of LenNIIproyekt).
