GRECHESKY AVENUE, running from Second Sovetskaya Street to Vilensky Lane. The avenue was laid in the 1860s and assumed its name in 1871 after the Greek Church of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica. The majority of the buildings originate from the first half of the 19th century - 20th centuries, including house No. 10-12 of the Basin Flat-Owners Association (1912-13, architects A.I. Zazersky, E.F. Wirrich, N.V. Vasilyev, A.F. Bubyr); house No. 8, the second school building named after Alexander III (1899-1900, architect B.A. Brzhostovsky) and presently a school; and house No. 21, formerly the third vocational college (1895-97, architect A.F. Krasovsky) and presently a school. In 1967, the previous site of the Greek Church became the Oktyabrsky Concert Hall (6 Ligovsky Avenue, architects V.A. Kamensky, A.V. Zhuk, J.M. Vierzhbitsky, G.M. Vlanin). Eminent residents of Grechesky Avenue include F.M. Dostoevsky (house No. 6, 1875-78), V.I. Lenin together with N.K. Krupskaya (house No. 15, 1905), Y.N. Tynyanov (house No. 15, 1919-36) and V.A. Kaverin (house No. 15, the 1920s).
