INZHENERNAYA STREET, running from Griboedova Canal to Belinskogo Square. The street was named in 1823 after the Principal Engineering College, which was located in the Mikhaylovsky Castle. The street was laid in the course of the building of Mikhaylovskaya Square (present-day Iskusstv Square) designed by architect C.I. Rossi in 1819-30s. The square's focal point is the Mikhaylovsky Palace (house No. 4). House No. 2/2, adjacent to the palace, was attached to the palace in 1914-19 as an exhibition hall (architects L.N. Benois, S.O. Ovsyannikov). House No. 4 was constructed in 1900-11 to accommodate the ethnographic collection of the State Russian Museum (architect V.F. Svinyin). House No. 5 was once occupied by the Ordonanshaus. Houses Nos. 8 and 10 are servants' quarters, and are part of the Mikhaylovsky Castle. House No. 4/6 was the residence of Count M.Y. Vielgorsky (see The Vielgorskys), which accommodated the first rehearsal of M.I. Glinka's opera Ivan Susanin, held in 1836. House No. 6 is the former barracks of the Electrical Squadron of the Field-Engineering Battalion, whose soldiers took part in the revolutionary events of 1905. House No. 9 was the Chief Administration Board of the Russian Society of the Red Cross (1876, architect D.V. Pokotilov), and house No. 12 was a fire station (1905-06, architect A.M. Kochetov). House No. 13 was the Chief Engineering Board of the Ministry of War (1880-82, architects C.I. Greyfan, Pokotilov).
