PIROGOV Nikolay Ivanovich (1810-1881), physician, teacher, public figure, Doctor of Medicine (1832), Corresponding Member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1847). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Moscow University (1828) and from the Professor Institute of Derpt University (1831). In 1835 he lived in St. Petersburg at 18 Kazanskaya Street. In 1836-40 Pirogov was professor of Surgery at Derpt University. In 1841-56 he was professor of the Medical Surgical Academy, where he created a clinic for military hospital surgery (now 3 Pirogovskaya Embankment; there is a memorial plaque in his honour on the building). Pirogov was founder and director (from 1846) of the Institute of Practical Anatomy of the Medical Surgical Academy. In 1841-43 he lived at 6 Shpalernaya Street, in 1843-51 - at 17 Gagarinskaya Street, in 1851 - at 24 Kirochnaya Street (the house was rebuilt), in 1852-56 – at 21/20 Nadezhdinskaya Street (the house was rebuilt; the Street is now called Mayakovskogo Street). From 1847 he was in the front-line army in the Caucasus and in Sevastopol (1854-55). Pirogov was a founder of Military Field Surgery and Military Sanitary Administration. Pirogov was the first to use ether narcosis in field situations, and modified bandaging of wounds with starch and plaster. He worked out the concept of transportation and sorting of the wounded and the use of sisters of mercy on the battlefield. Pirogov is the author of over 100 monographs and scientific papers in the field of surgery and anatomy. In the summer of 1855 he came to St. Petersburg and lived at 36/2 Liteiny Avenue (where there is a memorial plaque). After the departure from the Medical Surgical Academy (1856), he was curator of educational districts of Odessa and Kiev. In 1861 Pirogov retired and never returned to St. Petersburg any more. The first monument to Pirogov was installed in 1912 (sculptor М.Y. Kharlamov) on the landing of the main staircase of the clinic of the Military Medical Academy (3 Pirogovskaya Embankment). On the territory of Obukhovskaya Hospital (47 Zagorodny Avenue) in 1932 the bust of Pirogov was installed (sculptor I.V. Krestovsky). It was in this Hospital that Pirogov created his atlas of the "ice anatomy". In 1898, Sampsonievskaya Embankment was renamed Pirogovskaya Embankment, Maximilianovsky Lane in 1952 received the name of Pirogova Lane.
