PETROV Nikolay Nikolaevich (1876, St. Petersburg - 1964, Leningrad), physician, one of the founders of oncology in Russia, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939), Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944), Hero of Socialist Labour (1957). He graduated from the Military Medical Academy (1899). Petrov was a founder and the first director (1927-42) of the Institute of Oncology, author of the first comprehensive research in oncology in Russia (1910), founder of Questions of Oncology Journal. The Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR introduced a prize in honour of Petrov for best works on oncology. He was awarded the Lenin Prize (1963), and the Stalin Prize (1942). Memorial plaques in his honour were installed on the building and in the vestibule of the Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (41 Kirochnaya Street). There is a monument to Petrov in front of the building of the Institute of Oncology (Town of Pesochny, 68 Leningradskaya Street), made in 1973 by sculptor V.E. Cherkasov. Petrov was buried in Komarovskoe Cemetery.
