Oppel V. A., (1872 - 1932), surgeon

OPPEL Vladimir Andreevich (1872, St. Petersburg - 1932, Leningrad), surgeon, Doctor of Medicine (1899). He graduated from the Military Medical Academy (1896), and taught there, becoming a professor in 1907. In February-July 1917 he was President of the Military Medical Academy. From 1924 he headed the Department of Surgery in Mechnikov Hospital (concurrently serving as its director in 1925-29). He was a founder and representative (from 1926) of the Leningrad Department of the Russian Endocrinological Society. From 1931, Oppel headed the first in the USSR chair of Military Field Surgery of the Military Medical Academy. There are memorial plaques on the house where Oppel lived (23 Kirochnaya Street), and on the building of the Clinic of Military Field Surgery of the Military Medical Academy (5 Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenue; his memorial study was set up in the clinic). Oppel was buried in Bogoslovskoe Cemetery.
