Urgent Medical Help (UMH), specialised medical service. The beginning of UMN was laid by the foundation of the Society of the application of First Aid (chief doctor G. I. Turner) in 1899 and by the creation of five stations attached to fire-services (in 1900 the central station was opened). With the beginning of the First World War of 1914-18 the service of UMH was placed under military authority. During the February revolution of 1917 the UMH was established as a brigade and the service of UMN was rearranged with a military structure. In 1919 the Central Military Hospital (later it became a general hospital) of First Aid named after E.N. Pervukhin (100 Bolshoy Avenue, Petrogradskaya Side) was opened. In 1922 district stations were added. The Municipal Station of UMH (1 Malaya Sadovaya Street), now the Municipal Health Care Department, had an operative branch and 25 substations and served as a basic medical structure for serious cases. Over 180 crews (including specialized resuscitation-surgical, cardiac-nervous, toxicological crews, etc.) take some 1700 calls daily. Extra medical help is provided by UMH stations in Kolpino, Kronstadt, Petrodvorets, Pushkin, Sestroretsk, Lomonosov and also by adults' and children’s departments attached to district clinics. The Scientific Research Institute of First Aid named after I.I. Dzhanelidze is a multi-disciplinary institution rendering first aid (3 Budapeshtskaya Street) created in 1932 as a scientific practical institute for rendering first aid (100 Bolshoy Avenue, Petrograd Side), it received the status of a scientific research institute in 1945, in 1950 it was renamed after Dzhanelidze (has had its present name since 1986).
