BARANNIKOV Alexey Petrovich (1890-1952, Leningrad), scholar of Eastern Studies, Indianist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Kiev University in 1914. Worked as a scientific curator of the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum (1921-28), lectured at the Institute of Modern Eastern Languages (1921-36), chaired the department of Indian Philology of Petrograd (Leningrad) University (1922-52). In 1934, he was appointed research assistant of the Institute of Eastern Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and held the post of its director in 1938-40, later heading the sector of Indian philology in 1946-52. Initiated studies of modern India languages in the USSR. Barannikov wrote some 80 scholarly papers. In 1924 he lived at 1/17 Blokhina street. Buried at Komarovskoe Cemetery.
