OLENIN Alexey Nikolaevich (1763 or 1764-1843, St. Petersburg) statesman, archaeologist, philologist, graphic artist, member of the Russian Academy (1786), honorary member of the Academy of Arts (1804), president of the Academy of Arts (1817-43), honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1809), privy counsellor (1810). He lived in St. Petersburg from 1774. He graduated from the Page Corps in 1783 and studied abroad. From 1797, he was in charge of the Mint. In 1801 he became the Secretary of the State of His Imperial Majesty and was the Deputy Minister of Principalities from 1803. In 1808, he became an assistant of the Chief Director of Imperial Libraries. He was a director of the Imperial Public Library (1811-43). He was acting Secretary of State from 1814 and confirmed in this appointment in 1826. From 1827, he was a member of the State Assembly. He was a collector and connoisseur of antiquities, he wrote many articles in the sphere of history and archaeology. He contributed to the organization of the First Archaeological Expedition of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He left memoirs about the events of the interregnum of 19 November - 14 December 1825, in St. Petersburg. He illustrated publications of poems by G. R. Derzhavin (1795) and fables by I. I. Khemnitser (1799). The house of Olenin hosted a famous Petersburg salon. He lived at 101 Fontanka River Embankment from 1793 to 1813, at 97 Fontanka River Embankment from 1813 to 1819 and at 48 Bolshaya Morskaya Street from 1830 to 1843. He was buried in the Necropolis for Masters of Arts. There is a memorial museum on the Olenin estate in Priyutino near St. Petersburg.
