USHINSKY Konstantin Dmitrievich (1824-1870), teacher. In 1844, he graduated from the faculty of law of the University of Moscow and moved to St. Petersburg in 1849. Here he contributed to the Sovremennik and Biblioteka dlya Chteniya journals. In 1854, he took on a teaching job at the Gatchina Orphan Institute, where he performed the functions of supervisor from 1855 to 1859. In 1859-62, he was the supervisor of Smolny Institute, where he implemented progressive reforms. From 1859 to 1862, he edited the Zhurnal Ministerstva Narodnogo Prosvescheniya journal. From 1862 to 1867, he lived abroad and studied foreign teaching techniques. A founder of domestic science of education, Ushinsky left classical textbooks entitled The Children's World (1861) and The Mother-Tongue (1864). The pedagogical theory of Ushinsky is based on the idea of the national character of education, which aims at the development of an active and creative personality. From 1867 to 1870, Ushinsky lived at 8 Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. In 1970, his name was given to a new street in Kalininsky District. A monument to Ushinsky was erected in front of the central building of State Russian Herzen Pedagogical University (1961, sculptor V.V. Lishev, architect V.I. Yakovlev).
